Taking Citizenship Seriously in Uncertain Times

THE ALBERTAN FUD FACTOR

We are all caught up in the FUD Factor of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt due to COVID, recession impacts, with turbulence and volatility in almost every area of daily life.  It’s especially bad in Alberta because we have had it so good for so long and the Boom-Bust model of economics always bailed us out of recessions.

Booms based on oil prices have always seemed to bail us out, but not this time, and not anymore by the look of it.  There is no going back to a better yesterday.  There is no “New Normal” based on our history.  There is a rather unnerving sense about the “Next Alberta” being very different but it is yet to be defined, by us or other forces.

We are deeply divided politically, torn between the Leftwing “Socialists” to the Rightwing “Conservatives” with the majority of citizens in the Centrist “Moderates.”  The Left and Right partisans in our political culture are well funded, organized, and “fixin’ for a fight,” mostly with each other and with Ottawa on a regular basis. Centre Moderates are fragmented, underfunded, and dysfunctional politically.  We need more and better choices, don’t you think?   But how do we get them?  In the meantime…

HOW DO FEEL ABOUT THE UCP GOVERNMENT?

So with that, how are you feeling about your personal relationship with the government we elected a year-and-a-half ago?  Are you happy with the direction they are taking Alberta? Are they listening to you about your concerns? Do you have any influence on them? Do you feel your actions as a citizen is making a difference anyway?

HERE IS A LINK to a confidential Reboot Alberta Survey on these and other questions.  Many Albertans have already taken the 2 minutes to participate.  The questions are all relevant to gathering some useful data on your views about the government we elected and empowered to “make tough choices” on our behalf.  Please take the survey but note we ask for email addresses so we can directly connect with you to follow up on becoming better at Citizenship by being better at Voting.

GETTING A GRIP ON REALITY

Now we have a Hard-Right Ideologically driven UCP majority government that is in the personal control of one man, Jason Kenney, and he is an Authoritarian in a hurry.  He is also dedicated to keeping his Base of self-serving Old-Oil Oligarchs and Dominionists Evangelical Christian Zealots on-side.

If you are not in one of those UCP supporting tribes you don’t count in the Kenney consciousness…unless you are on his Enemies List.  That list includes doctors, nurses, teachers, public servants, environmentalists, LGBTQ communities, universities, and even AISH recipients.  They are all being actively abused by “our” government.  There will be others added to the List, including individuals Kenney has identified as his enemies.  They too will be abused through the power of the State in any way Kenney sees fit to use his political power.

A TIME FOR COURAGE

So how, as an “outsider” concerned citizen, can you bring your issues forward and get them on the political agenda?  How can you share your truth with an Authoritarian Majority Government with almost 3 years left in their “mandate?”

First, it will take personal, organizational, and institutional courage to step up because it will feel like you are entering the “political fray,” and rest assured, you are! If you speak up in an Authoritarian Regime, and Kenney is no different, you will get “noticed.”  Being noticed means you can be identified as a “trouble-maker.” That means you, and your organization, risk being added to the Enemies List and targetted for “special treatment.”  There may be ways that Reboot Alberta can provide some individual “cover” in some situations.

So what tools do we have to Press for Change?  The old ways of influencing government by writing letters, making phone calls, showing up at meetings and conferences, even joining the party in power, are all still there, even if modified significantly by the COVID realities.

But these normal tools in a representative democracy don’t work for ordinary concerned citizens who want to influence government policy and programs in Alberta these days.  This is because those we’ve elected to make our laws are all about the exercise of political power, not servant leadership.

The UCP government in Alberta today is stubborn, ideological purists, and focused only on accomplishing their own Hard-Right policy agenda.  Waiting to change things 3 years from now in the next provincial election seems futile.  That’s the bad news.

However, the good news is we have local government and school board elections next Fall.  We can organize now in our communities to take back Control, create Alternatives to old-style politics, and Delete the destructive forces of Authoritarianism being imposed on our Province and people by the UCP.

BE A BETTER VOTER

There are three ways to Press for Change in our province, our communities, and our political culture now: Organize! Organize! Organize! We need to do this around the local and school board elections in October 2021, STARTING NOW.

Reboot Alberta will be helping to make this happen. Being a Better Citizen means Being a Better Voter.  Being a Better Voter means being more aware, better informed, effectively engaged, and assertive activated.  It means taking politics seriously.
